Bowling report: Skinner rolls high game; Rago Bronze Certified

The Union Democrat Sports Department

Jason Skinner, of Jokers Wild, tried really hard to get a 300 but missed by just 16 pins, finishing with a 284 which was a whopping 117 pins over his average. Les Olson, of Helakno Full House, bowled three games consistently and ended up with high series for the guys with a 681. Jumping back to Jokers Wild, Holly Matranga found the strike zone without too much difficulty and notched the high game for women with a 248. In Helakno Full House, Amanda Klaahsen was hitting all the right boards and recorded the high series for women with a 568. Having success with the ball and pins also, we find: Bobby Papapetrou (High Rollers) with a 669; John Crass (Young at Heart) with a 258; in Jokers Wild, it is Robert Porovich with a 259/665, Steve Feola a 250 and Brian Basacker a 651; and in Helakno Full House, it was John Rago with a 257/662, Kevin Flanagan a 267 and Patrick Pillsbury a 661. Joining the "I can't believe that I beat myself," club this week are: Kara Bucci (High Rollers) who was 70 pins over her average game with a 220; in Young at Heart, it was Roger Leogrande going 82 pins over with a 234, John Crass was 79 over with a 258; in Jokers Wild, Matranga was 82 pins over with a 248 and Skinner was also 143 pins over with a 643 series. John Rago, who bowls in High Rollers and Young at Heart during the Winter season, recently traveled to Las Vegas to become a USBC Bronze Certified coach. His instructor was PBA member Del Ballard. He learned about bowling, ball construction and action, lane patterns and how to coach people of all ages and abilities. If there are still other bronze coaches locally, they have until Sunday to re-certify without paying extra fees. After Aug. 1, there is a fee to re-certify. A reminder to all bowlers and secretaries, the "Pins over Average for Game and/or Series" is back in place, effective Aug. 1. It is a lapel pin type award. There are no new rules for the 2011-12 year and the rule books that were issued last year remain in effect for the upcoming year. Trivia answer: Awards are earned between the USBC Fiscal year of Aug. 1 and July 31.
