Dambacher, Davis and Madruga examples of strong team leaders

With summer camp under way, senior tri-captains Nolan Dambacher, Austin Davis and Shawn Madruga have made strong impressions on Sonora head football coach Bryan Craig.

"All three of those guys make intelligent choices in leading our team on the field and off," said Craig.

Dambacher is a 6-foot-3, 225-pound fullback and middle linebacker.

"Nolan is that quiet leader that you're looking for on a football team," said Craig. "He works hard in the weight room. He does all the important things you'd want to see in a leader. He's a big, strong kid who never stops working. He is one of our captains because he leads by example."

Of the 5-8, 160-pound Davis, Craig said, "Austin is not a real tall or heavy guy, but he's gotten thicker. He's made himself stronger. We like him at free safety and as our slot running back. We also like that he's a strong vocal leader. He tells our people where to go and what to do."

The 6-2, 170-pound Madruga has a new nickname. And he can thank his extra hours in the weight room for it.

"It's 'Tarzan,' " said Craig. "We're calling him 'Tarzan' for how strong he's gotten. He's a real physical football player, too. He's a very smart kid in the classroom and he's taken those smarts with him to the football field."

2011 marks Craig's third season as Sonora's head coach. In his first year, 2009, Sonora made it to the Final Four of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV Championships. The Wildcats made the postseason last season as well.

Craig said space for banners are still available at Dunlavy Field for the 2011 season.

For businesses or organizations who wish to sponsor a Dunlavy Field banner that would hang on the temporary fence (put up during home football games), the donation is $350. To have a banner hung on a permanent basis (on the tennis court fence), the donation is $400. For more information, Craig can be reached at 559-1703.
