Summerville boys ease past Linden

LINDEN By spreading the scoring around, the Summerville High School boys' basketball team is still alive in the race for the Mother Lode League title.

Cody Munsel (18 points), Quint Gerber (15), Joe Sanders (12) and Daniel Atkins (10) all reached double figures as the Bears scratched their way past Linden 64-61 last night to remain two games behind Amador with two games remaining in the regular season.

"At this point, we're going to have to get help from somebody else if we're going to win (the MLL), but we also have to take care of our own business," Summerville coach Marlen Ronten said.

"Having Danny Atkins scoring more really helps, though," Ronten added. "He's been penetrating and causing lots of matchup problems."

Summerville (18-7, 6-2 MLL) wraps up its regular season with home games against Bret Harte on Tuesday and Amador on Friday. The Bears beat the Bullfrogs 67-63 in Angels Camp on Jan. 31 and lost at Amador 60-42 on Feb. 4.

If the Bears win both games, they would still need Amador to have lost its penultimate regular-season game on Tuesday against Linden last in the MLL with a league record of 0-8 after last night's loss to Summerville to earn a slice of the crown.

With Summerville trailing 20-17 through one quarter last night, Jake Heldstab came off the bench and sparked the Bears' to an 18-9 advantage in the second quarter.

Munsel took over in the second half, scoring 14 of his 18 points (to go along with a game-high 11 rebounds) as Summerville managed to hold off the Lions for a season sweep.

Summerville outrebounded Linden by 10 (37-27), but also committed seven more turnovers (17-10) than the Lions (18-14, 0-8) which "kept them in the game," according to Ronten.
