BH girls handed first MLL loss

SUTTER CREEK Bret Harte High School was in control most of the way, the Amador had the upper hand when it counted and came away with a 56-53 overtime victory over the Bullfrogs in a Mother Lode League girls' basketball game last night.

The Bullfrogs (15-9, 6-1) fell into a first-place tie with Calaveras (16-7, 6-1) with their first loss to Amador (13-10, 4-3) in anyone's memory.

"They were happy," Bret Harte coach Mike Lewis said. "I can't remember the last time they beat us."

Ricki Murphy did most of the damage for Amador, which avenged a 65-56 overtime loss to Bret Harte on Jan. 24 in Angels Camp. She scored 11 of Amador's 21 fourth-quarter points shooting 7-for-8 from the free-throw line and six of its 10 overtime points. She finished with a game-high 22.

Kathleen Avrit scored 11, and Megan Shires and Tianna Johnson 10 apiece for Bret Harte, which led 35-25 entering the fourth quarter. Avrit grabbed an offensive rebound and scored at the regulation buzzer to send the game into overtime.

Avrit nearly forced another overtime when she took a long pass at the 3-point line and fired with .3 seconds left. The ball hit the backboard, stuck to the rim for an instant, and then rolled off.

"The law of averages caught up with us," Lewis said, nothing that Bret Harte had won four MLL cliffhangers before finally dropping one.

The Bullfrogs, their five-game winning streak snapped, will try to bounce back Thursday in a home game against Argonaut of Jackson (2-18, 1-6). On Saturday, the Bullfrogs play host to Highlands of North Highlands in a non-league game at 2 p.m.
