Freshmen lead Tioga girls to victory

The outside-inside combination of freshmen Betsy King and Janessa Owens led Tioga High School to a 48-31 non-league girls' basketball victory over Stoneridge Christian of Merced last night at Tenaya School in Groveland.

King scored 13 perimeter points, hitting the game's only 3-pointer, and Owens worked closer to the paint for 12 as the Timberwolves (3-12) won for the second time in their last three games.

Tioga jumped ahead 13-7 in the first quarter and led 29-12 at halftime and 35-24 at the end of three quarters in avenging a 31-30 loss to Stoneridge on Jan. 16 in Atwater.

"The key to the first half was we played better defense," Tioga coach Jim McClure said. "We got a lot of steals and layups."

Kim Holt, another freshman, spearheaded the defense.

The Timberwolves are home again Thursday to play Calvary Temple of Modesto in a Mountain Valley League game, with tipoff set for 7:30 p.m.
