Bears, Cougs win; Cats fall

The Summerville High School boys' basketball team may not have flashed much of its razzle-dazzle offense on Friday night against Calaveras, but the Bears did exhibit one of this season's trademarks a fourth-quarter blitz.

With Summerville clinging to a four-point lead entering the final period, Quint Gerber sparked a game-sealing 11-5 run with a pair of steals as the Bears completed their season sweep of the Redskins with a 55-47 victory at the Summerville gym in Tuolumne.

Gerber, who finished with a game-high 16 points, scored a layup off his first steal and passed to a streaking Adam Artzer for another easy bucket before hitting his second 3-pointer of the game to put Summerville ahead 46-38 with 6:23 left.

Sonora whipped by LB

There'll be no Valley Oak League championship for Sonora this season. Los Banos saw to that by dominating the Wildcats 65-46 at Bud Castle Gym.

Sonora (11-10, 5-3) trails East Union of Manteca (17-5, 9-0) by 3 1/2 games with four to play. The Wildcats' hopes of defending their champion are gone, and their chances of making the playoffs will disappear, too, if they turn in more performances like Friday's.

"We're fighting for a playoff spot and (Los Banos is) fighting for a playoff spot, and they just wanted it more than we did," Sonora coach Rick Francis said.

Sonora led by six points early, but Los Banos (15-9, 4-5) took over with its pressure defense in the second quarter and went on a 21-4 run for a 35-23 halftime lead.

Cougs win squeaker

Chuck Storm's free throw with five seconds left gave Mother Lode Christian (16-5) a 70-69 non-league victory over Stoneridge Christian of Merced on Homecoming night at Rex Heath Gym in Tuolumne.

Storm actually made two foul shots, but the first was waved off because of a lane violation.
