Dillashaw victory bright spot in mat loss

Even a lopsided loss in a championship event can have

a bright spot.

Bret Harte High School got pummeled by archrival

Calaveras 49-13 in Thursday night's showdown for the

Mother Lode League dual-match wrestling title at the

Bret Harte gym, but everyone who bleeds purple and

gold felt like a champion when T.J. Dillashaw upset

Sam Fragoza in a thrilling bout at 112 pounds.

It was a classic duel between two of the top

wrestlers in a weight class that is absolutely loaded

in the Sac-Joaquin Section. The two already had met

twice this season, and they may go at it several more

times in the MLL, sub-section, and section tournaments, and possibly

even the State Tournament.

Dillashaw won 7-5 when he scored a takedown with four

seconds left in overtime. It was Dillashaw's first

victory over Fragoza, who finished fourth in the state

last season and is ranked No. 4 this year.

With the victory in hand, Dillashaw raised his arms

in triumph and jubilantly acknowledged the wildly

cheering Bret Harte fans on the nearly packed west

side of the gym.

The winning move?

"High crotch, arm drag, ankle pick," Dillashaw said

in his best wrestle-speak.

Whatever all that is, it gave Dillashaw perhaps the

biggest victory of his career after it looked like

Fragoza might have pulled a rabbit out his headgear by

tying the match 7-7 on a two-point reversal with one

second left in regulation after Dillashaw had taken

a 7-5 lead on a takedown with just 10 seconds

Josh Grimes followed with a 9-6 victory over Jason

Kulp at 119 pounds and Justin Middleton with an 8-0

whipping of Ryan Tanaka at 125 for Bret Harte. The team score read

12-10 at that point, after Calaveras has won the first

two matches by pin, and it seemed like the battle for

the title had been joined. But Calaveras (5-0 MLL) won

the next eight matches to easily wrap up its fourth

straight MLL crown.
