Masters swim to national qualifying times

Five Tuolumne County Aquatic Masters swimmers posted

national qualifying times in a 1,650-yard freestyle event at

Sonora Sport and Fitness Center, and at the Quadrathon

meet in San Francisco.

In the 1,650, Nancy Watts, Dave Fairfield, Frank

Helm, Susan White, and Ryan Layhee all made national

standards upon completion of 66 laps of 25 yards.

Watts, in the 50-54 age division, swam a personal

best by more than two minutes in 24:02.25.

Fairfield, Helm and White, all in the 60-64 group,

finished in 24:45.22, 25:06.51, and 28:47.72,

respectively. Fairfield improved by 15 seconds and

Helm by more than a minute, while White came close to

her personal best.

Layhee, in the 19-24 group, swam the fastest women's

time of the meet (22:06.81). She has been swimming

with the Masters only a short time and is recovering

from a broken collarbone sustained in a cycling

accident last summer.

White qualified for nationals in the 500 freestyle, clocking 8:28.96 in the Quadrathon (the 50, 100, 200 and 500 frees).

Alice Dale also swam in San Francisco, and came home with personal bests in the 500 (8:22.89) and the 100 free (1:23.14) in the 55-59 division.

Dale missed the nationals by only seven seconds in the 1,650 despite setting a personal best by more than 26 seconds (28:44.41). Paul McIlroy, 37, missed by three seconds with the fastest men's time of the day (19:57.86).

More than 80 Masters too par, with Heidi Holly-Johnson had the biggest improvement by dropping more than five minutes in 40:54.51. Dede Spaith and Ellie Nelson both improved by about 4 1/2 minutes, and Kelley Dambacher and Pat Atkins by about four.
