Crass nearly perfect in bowling league

ONE PIN is all that separated John Crass from bowling perfection.

Crass, one of Sonora Family Bowl's veteran competitors, fired a 299 game in the Morning Rollers winter league last Wednesday. He put together 11 straight strikes and then, one clean shot from a perfect 300, left a frustrating four-pin with his final ball.

A 300 would have been Crass' first at the Sonora center. He consoled himself with the week's high game and series (684).

Other high scores included a 244-683 by Larry Blackmore in Tuesday Nevada, a 257 by Bob Reedy in Guys and Dolls, a 256 by Dick Mattocks in Monday Nevada, a 660 by Philip Sugerman in Early Birds, and a 246-653 by David Hunter in Senior Merrymakers. Hunter's scores both were season highs for the league.

For women, Lela Girvan led the way with a 221 in Guys and Dolls, while Verna Smith had a 213 in Mixed Angels, Sharon McThorn a 212 in Birds, and Barbara Newman a 212 in Monday Nevada.

In the average-busters category, Blackmore went 50 over his game average and 101 over his series norm with his big scores, Pat Phelan went 54 over with a 185 game, and Carol Nunes went 69 over with a 513 series in Tuesday Nevada; Mattocks went 68 over with his 256, and Lela Girvan went 60 over with a 537 series in Monday; Girvan went 61 over with her 221, and Gail Duffey 70 over with a 496 in Dolls; and Larry Rush 90 over with a 648 in Monday.

THE SONORA Bowling Association's annual City Tournament is coming up on two weekends, the first Feb. 22 and 23, and the second March 1 and 2.

Competition for both women and men will be held in the traditional singles, doubles, all-events and team divisions.
