BEARS HURT BY HOME LOSS

Home cooking is hardly what it used to be for the Summerville High School girls' basketball team.

Instead of fattening up its Mother Lode League home record on Friday night against Bret Harte, Summerville (10-5, 2-2) fell behind early and then suffered through a stone-cold second half during a 47-32 loss at Summerville gym in Tuolumne.

While Bret Harte (13-8, 4-0 MLL) came out smoking from the field on Friday night, Summerville was left choking on the Frogs' exhaust. Just 2:54 into the game, Tawnie Lee, who scored nine of her game-high 17 points in the first quarter, drained a 3-pointer to put Bret Harte ahead 12-4.

Thanks to Megan Wingo's six first-quarter points, Summerville was lucky to find itself trailing just 16-8 heading into the second quarter.

After an Emily Self 3-pointer upped the Frogs' lead to 21-12 with 6:33 to play in the second quarter, Summerville finally began to find its rhythm on the offensive end.

Starting with a Kellie Pierce basket, and helped along by two buckets from Bridgette Berry, the Bears went on an 8-0 run to cut the Frogs' lead to 21-20.

But, as quickly as Summerville's offense appeared, it disappeared just as quickly. The Bears were unable to score again in the final 3:58 of the half, and when Bret Harte's Alyssa Cheney hit a shot with four seconds on the clock, the Frogs' went into halftime with a 25-20 lead.

Although the Bears managed to cut the lead back to three on a pair of free throws by Wingo early in the third quarter, Lee and Kathleen Avrit effectively ended Summerville's chances in a span of 1:07 midway through the period.

With Lee sandwiching a pair of 3-pointers around a 3-point play by Avrit, Bret Harte was able to extend its lead to 34-24 with 4:29 to play in the period.

Wingo led Summerville in scoring (15 points) and rebounds (12). Kelsey Wingo, Kellie Pierce and Bridgette Berry finished with four points apiece. Melissa Wise grabbed nine rebounds.
