BH girls rally past Argonaut

JACKSON The good news is, the Bret Harte High School girls' basketball team is playing its best in the fourth quarter.

The bad news is, it's taking the Bullfrogs that long to get going.

Last night, they trailed Argonaut which has only one victory 22-20 going into the final period before blowing past the Mustangs for a 43-34 Mother Lode League victory.

Bret Harte (12-8, 3-0 MLL) stayed in a first-place tie with defending champion and archrival Calaveras (13-6, 3-0) going into a big road game tomorrow against third-place Summerville (10-4, 2-1) in Tuolumne.

A switch from a zone press to a full-court, man-to-man trap turned the Argonaut game in the Bullfrogs' favor. Once they got the lead, the protected it by shooting 14-for-16 from the free-throw line down the stretch.

"We were getting good shots in the first half and we were just missing them," Bret Harte coach Mike Lewis said. "We weren't getting good shots in the third quarter, but we started getting some steals in the fourth."

Kathleen Avrit and Megan Shires scored 11 points apiece and Tawnie Lee 10 for the Bullfrogs. Avrit and Lee each hit a 3-pointer, as did Stephanie Stewart. The latter hit three big 3-pointers in last Friday's 65-56 overtime victory over Amador (10-9, 1-2).

Jaclyn Jenkins led Argonaut (1-15, 0-3) with 13 points.

After facing Summerville, Bret Harte gears up for a huge game Wednesday at home against Calaveras.
