Boys: Cougars, Bears prevail

Mother Lode Christian School came up with the big plays down the stretch and posted a hard-fought 55-48 boys' basketball victory over archrival Tioga on Tuesday night at Rex Heath Gym in Tuolumne.

The Cougars (14-4, 4-2 Mountain Valley League) trailed 44-42 in the fourth quarter when Josh Neal grabbed an offensive rebound and scored to tie the game.

A few moments later, Wil Quinlin who Tioga had not been guarding closely on the perimeter boldly launched a 15-footer and scored to put the Cougars up 48-44 and put them in control on the way to their third straight victory.

Mother Lode played virtually the entire game with only five players because of illnesses and the suspension of forward Chuck Storm for a dustup in Friday's victory over Stockton Christian.

Steven Baldwin, who nearly was too sick to play, led Mother Lode with 19 points, while Cory Henson scored 18 and Neal 10.

Jason Wiercinski worked inside for 20 points and Danny Monroe went outside for 10 to lead Tioga (9-9, 1-5).

Bears 76, Linden 58

Summerville may have posted a blowout-like score of 76-58 in their win over the Linden Lions at the Summerville gym, but it took the Bears 29 minutes to get there.

After letting double-digit leads slip through their fingers numerous times, the Bears (14-6, 2-1 Mother Lode League) finally rid themselves of the pesky Lions (10-9, 0-3) with a 13-0 run over the final 2:53 of the game.

Summerville, which entered the fourth quarter leading 61-48, saw its edge cut to 63-58 with 3:05 to play when Cody Munsel started the Bears' final run with a blue-collar layup under the basket at the 2:53 mark.

Munsel, who finished with a game-high 22 points, and Jake Heldstab, who came off the bench to score three points and grab four rebounds during the final push, keyed Summerville's late-game heroics.
