Bret Harte doomed by 19-2 run

Bret Harte High School fell victim to a 19-2 Argonaut run in the third quarter and fell to the Mustangs 79-74 in Mother Lode League boys' basketball action Tuesday night at the Bret Harte gym.

The Bullfrogs (9-11, 1-2 MLL) led 37-35 at halftime and upped their margin to seven points early in the third quarter before the Mustangs (8-12, 2-1) lowered the boom.

"Their press bothered us and we got frustrated with some calls," Bret Harte coach Jerry Rucker said.

Bret Harte also couldn't stop Argonaut's 6-foot-5 Mitch Ryan, who scored 25 points.

"This is just one of those years when we're small and everyone else in the league is tall," Rucker said.

Matt Critchfield scored 20 points for Argonaut and the Mustangs got nine from their other big guy, Brad Harris.

Travis Emerson led Bret Harte with 21, and Aaron Elevi, Scott Russell, James Gayle and Guy Castle scored 10 points apiece.

The Bullfrogs host another high-scoring opponent, Summerville (14-6, 2-1), on Friday night at 7:45.
