Despite being severely undermanned, the Summerville High School wrestling team managed a 14th-place finish at the 20-team David Mendoza Memorial Tournament at Lincoln of Stockton on Saturday.

Entering just five wrestlers in the 14 weight divisions, the Bears came away with a bronze medal, courtesy of Justin Cole, and three near-appearances in the medal rounds.

Wrestling in the 135-pound weight division, Cole, the No. 3-seed, finished with a record of 4-1 in earning his third-place medal.

Cole opened with back-to-back pins over Dylan Sanders of Argonaut and Gabriel Perez of Lincoln in the first two rounds, respectively. After losing to eventual champion Kyle Puboles of Union Mine by pin in the third round, Cole rebounded with a win by pin on Ralphi Stevens of Riverbank before dominating Silvano Buzo of Edison 12-4 in the consolation championship.

In the 145-pound weight division, Brent Buzinski, the No. 4-seed, finished with a record of 3-2. After losing his opening match and taking a bye in the second round, Buzinski won by pin and 1-0 in the third and fourth rounds, respectively, before dropping a 3-2 decision to Chris Grossi of Davis in the fourth-place match.

At 152 pounds, Bryan James, the No. 4 seed, also finished with a record of 3-2. After opening with a bye, James dropped an 8-4 decision in the second round. He then followed that with back-to-back decisions of 5-2 and 2-0 before losing by pin to third-place finisher Bob Cearley of Lincoln.

At 112 pounds, Thomas Salado-Poor, the No. 4-seed, finished with a record of 1-2. After opening the tournament with a win by pin in the first round, Salado-Poor dropped a 9-7 overtime decision before being eliminated in a 6-0 decision in the third round.

At heavyweight, Larry Jones opened with a win by pin, but then lost his next two matches by pin to finish with a record of 1-2.
