Tioga, Don Pedro lose

At Modesto, Tioga (9-7, 1-3 MVL) scored only six first-half points in a 58-34 loss to Calvary Temple.

"I think we hit rock bottom, and we're ready to come back up now," Tioga coach Jerry Woolsey said. "We've been in a funk since preseason, been in the fog. You play like you practice, and I think the guys finally see that. They're ready to listen now."

The Timberwolves trailed 35-6 at halftime, then outscored Calvary 28-23 in the second half. Jason Wiercinski had 13 points; Danny Monroe 11 points, nine rebounds and four assists; and Jeremy Gilbreath seven rebounds. Woolsey credited Andrew Marshall with full-court hustle.

Robert Pollard led Calvary with 15 points.

Tioga hosts Turlock Christian on Friday in Groveland.

Don Pedro not only lost to Stoneridge Christian of Merced, it also lost leading scorer Nick Swisegood to an ankle injury.

With the Panthers leading 18-11 early in the second quarter, coach Jerry Lettman's worst nightmare came true when Swisegood went down in a heap after stepping on another player's foot.

Although Swisegood managed to return for a couple of minutes in the third quarter, the Panthers (5-12) were unable to hold off Stoneridge without their star player, getting outscored 22-5 in the fourth quarter as they dropped a 66-41 decision at Tenaya School in Groveland.

Despite his limited action, Swisegood managed to lead Don Pedro in scoring with 19 points, while Robert Johnson added eight. Eli Masterson topped the Panthers in rebounds with 10.

John Flanagan scored a game-high 36 points for Stoneridge.

Although Swisegood did not break his ankle, he did suffer a severe sprain, which will force him to miss the next two days of practice. Lettman said Swisegood is questionable for Friday night's game against Calvary Temple in Modesto.
