Big win for Summerville over Hilmar

The Summerville High School boys' basketball team showed Hilmar and the rest of the Sac-Joaquin Section what it can do when playing at its best with a blistering shooting performance in a 66-63 win over the Yellowjackets on Tuesday night at the Summerville gym in Tuolumne.

The Bears (11-5) built a 15-point lead in the first half and managed to hang on thanks to a stellar night from the field. Summerville shot 27-for-52 (52 percent) overall, including 12-for-22 (55 percent) from 3-point range in beating one of the top-ranked small schools in the southern half of the section.

"That's probably as well as we've played all season considering Hilmar (13-2) is one of the top four schools in the section," Summerville coach Marlen Ronten said. "I think the reason we played so well was because as hard as we played, we practiced even harder on Monday night."

From the opening tip, Summerville was in charge as Cody Munsel hit back-to-back 3-pointers from the corner to give the Bears an early 6-0 lead. With Quint Gerber adding a pair of treys, as well, Summerville had Hilmar on the ropes with an 18-7 lead heading into the second quarter.

It looked like the Bears delivered the knockout punch at the beginning of the second quarter when Charlie Pierce, Daniel Atkins and Munsel hit three straight acrobatic layups off of fast breaks, giving Summerville a 23-8 lead and forcing the Yellowjackets to call a time out with 6:34 remaining in the half.

But the defending Trans-Valley League champions showed why they are once again a favorite to battle for the section title, slowly cutting away at the Bears' lead and entering halftime on a high note thanks to Michael Medeiros' 3-pointer at the buzzer, leaving the Yellowjackets with a 35-24 deficit at the break.
