Trout fishing was fair this week at New Melones Reservoir, with bank anglers bringing in more fish than trollers. Both were catching fish mostly in the one- to three-pound range.
Bank anglers are having best luck in Angels Cove, but Glory Hole Point is a good place to try, too. With all the rain, nightcrawlers and marshmallows are the best bet, but rainbow Power Bait might also work.
Mike Kiernan of Columbia caught a limit of two-pound trout with marshmallows and crawlers in Angels Cove, plus a 3.1-pound catfish that won him Glory Hole Sports Big Fish of the Week Contest.
Jason Morrill also caught a trout limit, plus one cat, while fishing in Angels Cove. He had best luck with crawlers and marshmallows, too, and also reports good luck throwing a blue-silver Kastmaster. Mike Carver caught a limit of trout doing the same thing.
As for trollers, Richard Kowski caught a limit near the dam at 15 feet deep with a chrome spinner and a crawler, and Clint Markham trolled a minnow 30 feet deep near the dam to catch a two-pound German brown.
Bass remain in the creek arms, crappie are 30 to 40 feet deep, and catfish are occasionally biting.
