Bears finish third in Hilmar tourney

HILMAR The Summerville High School boys' basketball team wrapped up its tournament season by beating Bret Harte 63-44 for third place in the Hilmar Christmas Classic on Saturday.

For the second time in the three-day event, Summerville's defense clamped down and limited its opponent to less than 10 points in two of the game's four quarters.

After falling behind 19-16 in the first quarter, the Bears held Bret Harte to three and eight points in the second and third quarters, respectively, while opening a 45-30 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

In the tourney opener against Patterson, Summerville allowed the Tigers just five and eight points in the first and second quarters, respectively, while winning 65-40.

Against the Bullfrogs, Joe Sanders led the Bears with 18 points while Cody Munsel and Quint Gerber added 16 and 12 points, respectively.

Summerville (10-4) ended up in the third-place game after dropping a 62-47 decision to Colfax in a Friday night semifinal.

At Loomis, the Wildcats (5-6) beat Woodcreek of Roseville 62-51 Friday and lost to Ponderoda of Shingle Springs 38-32 Saturday to finish sixth in the Del Oro Tournament.

All-tournament forward-center Jessica Peterson scored 27 points and guard Nicki Rodriguez and center Nichole Horvath 10 apiece against Woodcreek, which the Wildcats befuddled with crisp passing that produced a season-high 18 points in the first quarter on the way to a 32-20 halftime lead.

"We moved the ball well and got easy baskets," Sonora coach Charmon Logan said. "And we played a 2-3 zone (defense) the whole time and shut them down."

The defense was pretty good, but the offense was missing against Ponderosa as the Wildcats scored only 10 first-half points and trailed by 14 points, 31-17, going into the fourth quarter.
