SUMMERVILLE ADVANCES AT HILMAR

HILMAR Thanks to a suffocating defense that limited Patterson to just 13 first-half points, the Summerville High School boys' basketball team beat the Tigers 65-40 in the opening round of the Hilmar Christmas Classic on Thursday night.

"We did a really good job defensively," Summerville coach Marlen Ronten said of his team's 1-3-1. "We moved really well and forced a lot of turnovers."

Those turnovers led to plenty of scoring opportunities for Joe Sanders and Quint Gerber, who led the Bears with 26 and 15 points, respectively.

Cody Munsel and Adam Artzer added 12 and six points, respectively, for Summerville.

Summerville took a 32-13 lead into halftime and extended it with a 19-11 edge in the fourth quarter.

Summerville (9-3) faces undefeated Colfax (6-2) at 7 tonight in a championship-bracket semifinal. If the Bears win, they will play the winner of tonight's Bret Harte-Hilmar semifinal in the championship game at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

If the Bears lose tonight, they will play the loser of the Bret Harte-Hilmar semifinal in the third-place game at 6 p.m. Saturday.

The Bears' game against Orestimba of Newman, scheduled for tonight at 7:30 in Tuolumne, has been canceled.

Summerville coach Darcy Wingo said the Warriors didn't want to come up from the valley with a threat of snow in the forecast. Last year, he said, two vans carrying Orestimba's sophomore team got turned sideways on snowy roads near Standard Park a scary occurrence for anyone, especially those unaccustomed to snow.
