SUMMERVILLE THIRD AT RIVERBANK TOURNEY

RIVERBANK The Summerville High School boys' basketball team rebounded from a disappointing loss to host Riverbank on Friday to beat Ripon Christian in the third-place game of the Riverbank Tournament on Saturday.

After beating Calvary Temple in the first round on Thursday, the Bears (4-2) ran across rough-and-tumble Riverbank for the second time in four days and, once again, came up on the short end of a 54-41 score.

"(Riverbank's) style of play kind of takes the skill out of the game," Summerville coach Marlen Ronten said of the Bruins, who beat Summerville 62-49 on Dec. 3. "I'm not complaining about the refereeing, but they're very physical, and if they don't call fouls (Summerville had only two free-throw attempts in the game), it's very tough for us to play them."

The Bears jumped out to an 18-10 lead over Riverbank in the opening minutes of the second quarter, but began to disintegrate when the Bruins hit a couple of 3-pointers, opening the way to a 21-8 second-quarter edge to Riverbank.

"Those 3-pointers got them back into it," Ronten said. "Then they began to wear us down physically."

Joe Sanders and Quint Gerber scored 12 points apiece for Summerville and Cody Munsel added 10. Sanders also led the Bears with 13 rebounds, four steals and three assists

Adan Mercado led three Riverbank players in double figures with 14 points.

After the 13-point loss to Riverbank on Friday, Summerville bounced back with a convincing 60-50 win over Ripon Christian on Saturday in the third-place game.

Sanders (17 points) and Munsel (16 points) helped the Bears survive a late charge by RC when a Munsel alley-oop found Sanders high above the rim for a game-sealing dunk in the closing minutes.

Although Ripon Christian outrebounded Summerville 46-34, the Bears more than made up for it by turning the ball over just eight times to RC's 28 and went six-for-nine at the free-throw line in the final two minutes.

Sanders, an all-tournament selection, scored 15 of his 17 points in the second half to go along with six rebounds, three steals and three assists.
