SUMMERVILLE GIRLS LOSE IN DOUBLE-OVERTIME

Too many fouls against Summerville leading to too many free throws for host Riverbank ultimately doomed the Bears in a 61-54 double-overtime loss on Tuesday.

After taking a 32-21 lead into halftime, Summerville (1-1) saw its edge slowly melt away in the second half when foul trouble began to catch up with the Bears. Leading scorers Megan Wingo (18 points) and Kellie Pierce (14 points), as well as Melissa Wise and Leena Van Treece, eventually fouled out.

"The biggest thing about the game was the foul situation and free throws," Summerville coach Darcy Wingo said. "You need to keep your regulars in there, but we got into foul trouble early, which adds up at the end."

Riverbank made use of its advantage at the foul line, especially in the two overtime periods when the Bruins shot 9-for-16 from the charity stripe.

"You never like to lose a nailbiter," Wingo said. "We missed so many easy shots and layups, it gets to be frustrating. But I'm not displeased at all.

"I just wish we could have been a little better on the defensive end and stayed out of foul trouble."

Monica Cardenas and Megan Medrano led Riverbank with 17 and 16 points, respectively.

Summerville opens the three-day Kiwanis Tournament at Sonora at 6:30 p.m. Thursday against McQueen of Reno.
