The Summerville High School volleyball team's record dipped back to .500 after dropping a five-match decision to Patterson on Wednesday at the Summerville gym in Tuolumne.

After splitting the first four games (10-15, 15-12, 15-17, 15-9), the Bears led 14-13 in the decisive fifth game before falling 14-16 in rally scoring.

"Patterson is a good defensive team," Summerville coach Kristy Dwyer said. "They were able to dig up a lot of our hard-hit balls."

After starting the season 3-0, the Bears are just 1-4 in their last five matches with only this weekend's Gold Country Rotary Tournament at Sonora standing between them and the start of Mother Lode League play.

"Physically, we're not covering the court very well because we're not very fast, and mentally, we're not going to the right spots," Dwyer said.

Amy Shaw led the Bears (4-4) in serving, going 18-for-21 with three aces for 14 points She also led in setting at 42-for-51 with 11 assists. Lindsay Vermillion was 27-for-32 with 12 kills with 13 defensive digs and 15-for-17 on serve-receive.

Other statistics:

Serving Jessica Fernandez (15-for-18, 12 points, three aces) and Amanda Anderson (15-for-19, 12 points).

Hitting Anderson 34-for-45 with eight kills, Megan Wingo 28-for-33 with eight).

Blocks Anderson three, Shaw and Wingo two each.

Setting Fernandez 48-for-55, 15 assists.

Defensive digs Wingo 12.

Sophomores The Bearcubs (8-5) dropped a 10-15, 15-12, 15-10 decision to Patterson. Serving leaders were Courtney Buljan (14-for-16, two aces) and Amber Taylor (7-for-7, one ace). Buljan led in setting (45-for-48, 12 assists). Hitting leaders were Krystal Edgerton (10-for-12, three kills), Nicole Caldera (12-for-15, four) and Stephanie Artzer (11-for-15, two). Edgerton led in blocking (7-for-8, four stuffs).

Freshmen The Cubbies (5-2-1) topped Patterson 15-7, 15-11. Kelsey Wingo led in hitting (16-for-19, seven kills) and serving (11-for-11, two aces), while Sawn Wilk (14-for-19 hitting) and Lindsay Salter (8-for-9, two aces serving) also played well.
