The Sonora High School girls' golf team matched its best score of the season, but still fell to Valley Oak League-leader Manteca 243-287 on Tuesday at Mountain Springs Golf Course.

"That's a great score for us," said Sonora coach Steve Lee, whose team also shot 287 at Mountain Springs against Oakdale and on Sept. 3 against Bret Harte at Greenhorn Creek in Angels Camp on Aug. 22. "It's a score that would have won six league matches for us, but we faced a team that is now 9-0 and is securing a handle on the No. 1 spot. They played (Mountain Springs) as tough as anybody I've seen."

Lindsey Bannwarth's round of 49 was Sonora's only sub-50 score. Jenni Beggs and Jenny Hummel led Manteca with rounds of 43.

Sonora (3-7 overall, 3-6 VOL) will visit the Oakdale Country Club to take on the Mustangs on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
