Bullfrogs face first of two new schools

What Bret Harte High School football coach Gordon Sadler wants out of Friday's game against Johnson West can be summed up in one word: "Consistency."

Kickoff between the Bullfrogs (1-0) and the Warriors (0-1) is set for 7:30 p.m. at American River College in Sacramento.

Sadler is mostly concerned with his offense, which was balky in the first half and had a bit of trouble keeping a handle on the ball.

"I'm not happy about the three turnovers," he said.

Bret Harte overcame them, outscoring Livingston 19-0 in the second half for a 26-9 victory last Friday in the season opener at Dorroh Field in Angels Camp. The offense got it in gear after halftime and junior James Gayle rushed for 206 yards and two touchdowns.

"It was a good win for us," Sadler said. "We hadn't beaten them in quite a while."

There's always, of course, room for improvement, especially this early in a season. Sadler reached into his book of famous quotations for inspiration, citing none other than legendary Green Bay Packers coach Vince Lombardi.

"He said, 'You can't achieve perfection, but in the pursuit of perfection you can achieve excellence,' " Sadler said. "You have to strive for perfection."

Johnson West is the first of two straight brand-new teams on the schedule for Bret Harte, which hosts Waterford next week for an early Homecoming. West is a spinoff from old Sacramento school Hiram Johnson, which went to the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I semifinals last year.

The fledgling school has 850 students and is a member of the new Division III Pioneer Valley League. Coach Hugh Hunter's Warriors lost their inaugural game last week at home to Modesto Christian, 42-15.
