Volley Bears win opener


MARIPOSA The Summerville High School volleyball team got its season off to a good start with a solid 15-9, 15-8, 15-9 victory over Mariposa on Thursday night.

"For the limited amount of time I've been able to spend with them, I was quite surprised with how well they played," Summerville coach Kristy Dwyer said. "I was surprised with how few errors there were."

With the Bears employing a new 6-2 look, Jessica Fernandez (31-for-34 setting, 14 assists) and Amy Shaw (19-for-21, eight assists) were strong at the setter positions.

Lindsay Vermillion lead Summerville in serving (16-for-17, 15 points), serve-receive (8-for-8), hitting (12-for-14, 7 kills) and defensive digs (24-for-29).

Fiona Sullivan added two block stuffs and went 6-for-6 on serve receive, Amanda Anderson hit 14-for-21 with six kills, and Anderson was 16-for-20 and Valerie Foster 17-for-19 on digs.

The Bears host Sonora on Monday in a scrimmage before traveling to Hughson and LeGrand on Tuesday and Thursday, respectively.
