Bret Harte

The return of four players from a championship team has the Bullfrogs thinking of another title but in a different league.

The 2001 Mother Lode League champs are now in a hybrid called the Mountain Valley League. It's a 13-team mixture of schools from the MLL, the Trans-Valley League and the Southern League, and it came about at the behest of Bret Harte coach Rich Cathcart because the MLL was down to three teams Bret Harte, Calaveras and Linden after Amador dropped out.

Cathcart had to do a lot of persuading and scheduling before his idea was adopted, but the Bullfrogs have a home and they're ready to roll with two No. 1 players in their lineup. Junior Krystal Thomson returns after playing the lead role last year and senior Lauren Miller, the No. 1 player two years ago, is back after spending her junior year in Italy as an exchange student.

Only four scores will count this year, compared to five last year, when a number of teams couldn't put full complements on the course.

Sonora

Former Sonora High School baseball head coach and assistant football and boys' golf coach Steve Lee is adding a fourth page to his resume as he takes over for the 2002 season.

Lee, who teaches economics and government at Sonora, will bring an understanding of the game's ups and downs (he's a 10-handicap) to a team that returns Lindsay Bannwarth, Morgan Minners and McKenzie Dambacher among its roster of seven or eight players.

"I don't pretend to be a pro or anything like that, but I enjoy the game and realize it takes a tremendous amount of commitment and ability," Lee said. "It's a thinking game like no other."
