TCA team second-fastest in Tahoe race

A team representing the Tuolumne County Aquatic Masters took advantage of favorable conditions to post a second-place finish in the annual Trans-Tahoe Relay at Lake Tahoe.

Captain Julie Hulet, Susan White, Sheila Monaghan, Jodie Forster, Annie Alesna and Lisa Westerman swam the 11.5-mile crossing in five hours, 11 minutes an hour faster than last year. They were backed by alternates Erika Hagstrom-Dossi and Deb Tweddell.

Calm, 64-degree water and clear weather made for a relatively easy crossing. Last year, rough water, wind and cold temperatures turned the relay into a test of attrition.

Swimmers start out with 30-minute legs, then reduce their time in the water to 20 minutes apiece, and finally 10, as the day wears on.

The TCA group competed in the 240-plus age group based on the combined ages of its members.

The race began at Sand Harbor on the Nevada side and ended at Skylandia Beach on the California side of the lake.

The TCA team swam in memory of Hagstrom-Dossi's father, Jon Hagstrom, and was sponsored by Sonora Sport and Fitness Center, where the Masters train.
