Kurt Watson and Candace Loyd have been named Summerville High School's outstanding senior athletes for 2001-02.

Watson, the choice as outstanding male athlete, played four years of football, basketball and baseball for Summerville and twice was an all-Mother Lode League selection in football. He quarterbacked a Bears football team last fall that was challenging for the MLL championship until he suffered a broken leg before a big game against eventual champion Amador in the ninth week of the season.

Summerville went on to earn the first postseason football victory in school history before finishing second in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV playoffs.

The injury also kept Watson out of the early part of the basketball season, but he came back and helped the Bears finish second in the MLL and earn a Division IV playoff berth.

In baseball, Watson played third base, pitched and caught for a Summerville team that contended for a playoff berth until late in the season. He was given honorable mention in all-league voting.

He earned Summerville's coveted "3D Block," which goes to athletes who participate in 10 or more sports seasons during their high school careers.

Loyd, Summerville's outstanding female athlete, also earned a 3D Block as a four-year member of the soccer and softball programs and a three-year volleyball player. She participated in soccer and softball simultaneously this year after soccer was switched from winter to spring.

As the Bears' sweeper, she was named the MLL's Outstanding Defensive Player for the second year in a row (and third time in four years) while helping Summerville win both the league and section Division III championships for the second straight time.

She anchored a defense that posted six shutouts in 10 league games an another against Lincoln in the first round of the playoffs.

In volleyball, Loyd helped Summerville finish second in the MLL and make the Division IV playoffs. In softball, she was a two-time all-MLL selection.
