The Bret Harte High School athletic program ended a banner 2001-02 school year by leading the Mother Lode League with five varsity titles won by its boys' and girls' teams.

The Bullfrogs earned two titles in the fall campaign (girls' golf and girls' cross country) and three more during the spring (boys' track, girls' track and boys' golf).

Bret Harte's five team titles were one more than runner-up, Argonaut, which won in boys' soccer, coed tennis, boys' swimming and girls' swimming.

Amador ranked third with its three team titles in football, boys' basketball (which also won a section title) and baseball.

Summerville (boys' cross country, section-winning girls' soccer), Calaveras (girls' basketball, wrestling) and Linden (volleyball, boys' track with Bret Harte) won two titles apiece.

In its final year as a member of the MLL, Brookside Christian's section-winning softball team accounted for the Knights' only title.

At the frosh-soph level, Bret Harte won two titles in girls' basketball (tied with Summerville and Argonaut) and girls' cross country.

Argonaut led the way with four frosh-soph titles, in boys' basketball, girls' basketball, softball and girls' track.

Amador won frosh-soph titles in football, baseball and boys' track, while Summerville won in girls' basketball and girls' soccer, Calaveras in boys' cross country and wrestling, and Linden win boys' soccer and volleyball.

Brookside Christian did not win a frosh-soph title.
