Loyd leads Summerville awards parade
The Summerville High School girls' soccer team officially ended its second straight Sac-Joaquin Section Division III championship season with its annual awards banquet on campus Wednesday night.
Senior Candace Loyd capped her illustrious prep career by earning the Varsity 3D letter. This rarely presented award is given to student-athletes who capture at least 10 junior varsity and/or varsity letters during their four-year careers.
Loyd actually exceeded the minimum requirement by earning 12 letters during her career. She received four varsity letters in soccer, three varsity and one junior varsity letter in softball and two varsity and two junior varsity letters in volleyball.
While Loyd captured the outstanding career award, senior midfielder Jenni Capuccini won the team's Most Valuable Player award.
Other individual awards went to Valarie Lozoya (Most Spirit), Molly Baker (Best Sportsmanship) and Lauren Gianelli (Most Improved).
Special Achievement awards went to Jordan Vermillion (single-season scoring record with 36 goals), Megan Reynolds (six game-winning goals during the season, most on the team), Kellie Pierce (exceptional challenge as the new goalkeeper), Shannon Hayes and Kelly Marquardt (most hustle) and Lindsay Vermillion and Ashley Rice (outstanding play as center midfield tandem).
At the frosh-soph level, individual honors went to Kristi Simmons (Most Valuable Player), Lauren Houseberg (Most Spirit), Rebekah Crotty (Best Sportsmanship) and Mariko Nihonyanagi (Most Improved).
