Baseball Cats win Hughson title

HUGHSON The Sonora High School baseball team captured the championship of the Hughson Tournament by tying Buhach Colony of Atwater 4-4 on Friday and beating Amador 6-2 on Saturday.

Those results, coupled with an 8-7 victory over Hughson on Thursday, gave Sonora a 2-0-1 record in the tournament. The Wildcats were awarded the title via a victory by Hughson over Buhach.

The highlight of the weekend for Sonora, 2-2-1 overall, was a complete game by senior right-hander Eric Breien against Amador, the defending Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV champion. Breien gave up only three hits and allowed no earned runs while striking out nine and walking three.

He threw somewhere between 95 and 115 pitches, Sonora coach Mike Silva said. I didnt want to use him that much, but he was going along fine and he said everything was okay. Amador had some good hitters and he just kept them off balance.

Supporting Breien at the plate were leadoff man Travis Hendrix, who went 3 for 3 with a walk and a run scored, and A.J. Pinocchio, who drove in two run and scored one. Kurt Stanbridge, Kyle Rutkin, Mike Elgin and Colton Silva also scored for the Wildcats.

In the Buhach game, Elgin doubled and scored in the fifth as a prelude to a two-run home run by Mike Taylor. In the sixth, Karl Waited reached on a two-base error, stole third and scored on a sacrifice by Stanbridge.

Silva said the effort was rather sloppy against a team of sophomores representing the first-year school.

Sonora will take a step up in competition this week in the Turlock Tournament, which runs Thursday through Saturday.
