RIVERBANK Strong pitching performance by Bubba Friestad and Travis Ford made up for a lack of offense as the Summerville High School baseball team played to a 2-2 at Riverbank on Tuesday.

Im very happy with the intensity of the team and encouraged by the pitching, Summerville coach Donnie Wright said. The game was called after six innings due to darkness.

The Bears took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning when 1B Adam Artzer was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, driving in C-3B Kurt Watson and SS Quint Gerber followed with an RBI-single to left field, scoring RF-RP Ryan Drewery.

Gerbers RBI single was one of only three Bears hits on the day. Second baseman Mikey Hernandez had a two-out double in the first inning and Drewery added a single later in the game.

Our hitting will be fine, Wright said. Weve only had two batting practices all season, so we just need to get some more swings.

Riverbank cut Summervilles lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the third inning against Friestad (2-23 IP, ER, 3 H, 1B, 2 HBP, 2 K), who was making his first start of the season. Ford relieved Friestad with two outs in the third inning and proceeded to give up only one unearned run in three innings of work while striking out five.

Location was the main thing and Bubba was right on, Wright said. Travis will be a starter; we just wanted to get him some work.

Drewery got the final out in the bottom of the sixth inning after Riverbank tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Summerville is off until Monday when it travels to Gustine for a 3:30 p.m. game.

Frosh-Soph The Bearcubs (0-2) dropped a 6-4 decision to Riverbank on Tuesday.
