If you build it, they will come.

Sonoras High Country Sports Arena, located at 14934 Camage Ave., has turned W.P. Kinsellas famous quotation into a reality.

The Western Collegiate Roller Hockey League has agreed to have the rink host the 2002 Regional Championship on Saturday and Sunday.

The arena, which opened on January 12, will not only host six Division I teams and three B teams playing for the regional championship, but also an all-star game with a skills competition and a youth game.

This is going to be some of the best roller hockey in all of California, High Country Sports Arena director Ric Garcia said.

Bracket play will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday with round-robin bracket play.

The Division I bracket will feature Chico State (already qualified for the CRHL Nations in St. Louis), University of California at Santa Barbara, Sonoma State, Cal Poly SLO, Cal Poly Pomona and the University of California at Davis.

The B team pool will feature Cal Poly SLO B, Cal Poly Pomona B and UC Santa Barbara B.

Following the pool play, the Division I All-Star Game will begin at 7 p.m. with a skills competition scheduled for halftime.

Events in the skills competition will include fastest skater, most accurate shooter, shootouts, stick handling, hardest shot and more.

A group of local kids ages 5-to-6 will also play a brief game at halftime.

The semifinals and championship games will begin on Sunday at 9 a.m. with the B championship scheduled for noon and the Division I championship at 1:30 p.m.

If the Division I champion is not one of the top two regular season teams from the Western Collegiate Roller Hockey League, it will receive an automatic bid to the April 4 through 7 Nationals in St. Louis.

Tickets cost $2 per adult and are free for kids. Approximately 300 tickets are still available for this weekends event.
