SONORA Bret Harte High School squeaked by in the semifinals and rolled in the finals to win its second straight championship in the Sonora Kiwanis Girls Basketball Tournament.

The Bullfrogs (4-1) edged Del Oro of Loomis 40-39 in

Fridays semifinals and whipped Alameda 70-51 in

Saturdays championship game. They began the 27th

annual event by rallying from a 20-point, second-quarter deficit for a 72-60 victory Thursday over Casa Grande of Petaluma.

Senior guard Bri Bales, who rallied Bret Harte from a seven-point deficit in the last four minutes against Del Oro with some clutch 3-point shooting, was named the tournaments Most Valuable Player, and senior point guard Amy Justice earned a spot on the all-tournament team.

The Bret Harte-Del Oro game was the best of the tournament and things looked bleak for the Bullfrogs when Del Oro scored eight straight points for a 35-28 lead with 4:17 remaining. Seven points seemed like a huge lead in a game dominated by defense, but Bales hit a trey with 4:01 to play and, after a missed Del Oro free throw, Justice nailed another to make it 35-34 with 3:23 remaining.

Megan Griffith, Del Oros 6-foot-3 center, made two foul shots at the 3:02 mark and Justice countered with a free throw of her own to make it 37-35 with 2:52 to play. Then Bales stepped up once again and drained a 3-pointer from the right corner to give Bret Harte a 38-37 lead with 2:25 on the clock.

A Courtney Shires bucket gave the Bullfrogs a 40-37 lead at 1:35 and Griffith countered at 1:16. Del Oro missed a chance to take the lead with 47 seconds left when Tara Marconi missed the front end of a one-and-one with 47 seconds left, then Bret Harte missed a chance to all but wrap it up when Kate Wooster missed a one-and-one with 12 seconds to play.

Del Oro rebounded and roared down court, but Andrea Brar missed a flying layup from the left side. The Golden Eagles rebounded and went up for a shot at the buzzer, but were rejected by a sea of Bullfrog hands.
