Summerville hangs tough through shooting woes

RIVERBANK Although the Summerville High School basketball team ultimately finished fourth at the Ron Peterson Tip-Off Tournament over the weekend after losing two of its three games, dig a little deeper and youll find reasons to believe the Bears are rounding into form.

That the Bears (2-6) even reached the championship bracket is a good sign in itself. Summerville scored a season-high 77 points on Thursday, blasting Orestimba of Newman by 21 points and setting itself up for quality games on Friday and Saturday against Ripon Christian and Denair, respectively, as the roster began to settle in with the addition of late-arriving football players Kyle Kosako, Daniel Atkins and Eric Bisset.

The football players have brought some quickness and hustle to the court, but at this point we need practice and not games, Summerville coach Marlen Ronten said.

Against Ripon Christian, Summerville was once again plagued by a slow start, falling behind 33-17 at the half before rebounding in the second half.

The Bears got back into the game by outscoring RC 16-11 in the third quarter, and even cut the deficit to two points in the fourth quarter before falling victim to foul trouble.

Although the Knights did not make a field goal in the fourth quarter, they managed to stay ahead of Summerville by connecting on 14 free throws in the final quarter as Kosako and Atkins fouled out for the Bears. For the game, RC made 25 free throws in 42 attempts while Summerville was sent to the line only 12 times, connecting on 10 free throws.

We played a good RC team tough in the second half but we could not overtake them, Ronten said. The fouls (Summerville was whistled for 28 fouls while RC was caught for only 13) were very questionable.
