RIVERBANK The Summerville High basketball team got off to a slow start, came on strong for a time and then finally went cold in a 71-38 season-opening basketball loss to Riverbank on Friday night.
The Bears trailed 17-6 after one quarter, then outscored the Bruins 18-15 in the second quarter to trail only 32-24 at halftime. Riverbank spurted away in the third quarter with a 22-8 burst for a 54-32 lead going into the fourth quarter.
They are a very good and experienced team, Summerville coach Marlen Ronten said of the defending Sac-Joaquin Section Division III champion Bruins. Theyre mostly seniors and we had seven juniors and one senior suit up and only two players had varsity experience.
We had some good things happen, but we shot poorly (25 percent) and didnt hit any 3-pointers (0-12), he added. If we had shot better, we would have given them a close game.
Cody Munsel led the Bears with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Terry Sullivan (11 points, 12 rebounds) and Quint Gerber (seven points, five steals, three assists) also played well for Summerville.
The Bears play their home opener Tuesday night at 7:30 in Tuolumne against Mariposa, then visit Sierra of Manteca on Wednesday before player their annual cross-county rivalry game against Sonora on Saturday night in Sonora. The game against Sierra means Summerville will have played both Division III finalists in a span of four days.
After the Sonora game, Summerville comes right back the following Monday with a home game against Denair.
Sophomores The Bearcubs dropped a 63-40 decision to Riverbank in their first game of the season. Adam Aubel led the team with 14 points and eight rebounds.
Freshmen The Cubbies opened their season with a 52-28 win over Riverbank. Robert Beck (12 points, seven rebounds) and Paul Benkula (12 points, six rebounds) paced the team.
