Basketball Bears fall to Denair

The temperature may have been falling on Monday night, but the Summerville High School basketball teams shot certainly were not.

The Bears (1-4) were colder inside the Summerville gym against Denair than the weather was outside, shooting a meager 25 percent (14 for 56) from the field on their way to a 72-47 loss.

We didnt shoot well and we had way too many turnovers again, Summerville coach Marlen Ronten said. If youre not shooting well, you cant control that. But you can control turnovers.

Denair took control of the game early and never looked back, using a 16-2 run over the final 4:58 of the first quarter to take a 22-6 lead into the second.

Although Summerville couldnt buy a basket in the first quarter, they managed to hang around in the second quarter and even got within 10 points twice during the period.

Quint Gerbers 3-pointer with 4:54 remaining capped an 8-2 Summerville run that cut the deficit to 24-14.

Chuck Storm made it a 10-point game again at 29-19 with 2:29 left in the half when he hit the front end of a one-and-one free throw.

But, the Bears mini-runs came to nothing as Denair reeled off a 10-0 run over the final 2:05 of the first half to take a 39-19 lead into halftime.

A big part of the problem was our rebounding it was atrocious, Ronten said. We may be small, but we had better do other things to make up for that.

Joe Sanders (18 points, 10 rebounds) and Zac Doster (eight points) finally began to feel it in the third quarter, combining for Summervilles first 11 points of the second half as they once again sliced into Denairs lead, this time cutting it to 41-30 with 5:05 left in the quarter.

Dustin Hagens, however, kept the Bears from getting any closer as his seven third-quarter points allowed Denair to take a 55-36 lead into the fourth quarter.
