TUOLUMNE Mother Lode Christian School nearly pulled off a comeback victory, but was edged 64-59 in his home opener by Delhi on Friday night at Rex Heath Gym.

The Cougars (0-2) had a chance to tie in the final minutes, but a 3-point shot by Bobby Wilson rimmed out.

I though it was in and wes be able top pull if off, Mother Lode coach Branden Hall said. After that it was down to free throw shooting.

Delhi finished only 15 for 25 from the line, but made enough of its foul shots down the stretch to hold off Mother Lode.

Cory Henson had a big game for the Cougars with 25 points and Steven Baldwin scored 11 while driving Delhi crazy with his perimeter defense.

He had six steals and five breakaway layups, Hall said.

Mother Lode hurt itself, though, with poor outside shooting. The Cougars made only four of 25 3-pointers after going 3 for 32 from beyond the arc in a loss to Wilton Christian on Nov. 13.

I know the shots will start falling, and once they do well be fine, Hall said.

Juan Machado grabbed 10 rebounds, but Mother Lode wasnt able to match Delhi inside because of the illness-caused absence of Jon Atkins.

Hes never very tall, but he plays great inside defense, Hall said. They just killed us on the post.

The Cougars host Rite of Passage of Angels Camp on Tuesday night at 7:30 and entertain Trinity Prep of Napa at 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 23.

In the first game of a girls-boys doubleheader, the Mother Lode girls (0-2) lost 32-25 to Delhi. Amanda Hess scored eight points and Julie Bennett five for the Cougars.
