MARIPOSA 7:24.

Thats all it took seven minutes and 24 seconds of spectacular running, pinpoint passing, ferocious tackling and opportunistic special teams play by the Summerville High School football team to wipe away a lifetime of playoff frustration and emerge with the first postseason victory in school history a 35-0 blowout of the Mariposa Grizzlies on Friday at the Mariposa County Fairgrounds in the first round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division IV tournament.

Really, it was the whole team, said Summerville coach Dave Woods, who earned his first playoff win in seven tries with Summerville. Everything we wanted to have happen, happened.

It all started happening midway through the first quarter for Summerville (7-3-1), which used those seven minutes and 24 seconds to jump out to a 28-0 lead from which the Bears would never look back.

After both teams began the game with feel-out-the-defense possessions resulting in punts, the Bears began their outburst of fury from their own 36-yard line with 8:03 remaining in the first quarter.

On first down, running back Danny Jo Herrin (five carries for 104 yards, touchdown) took a pitch from quarterback Tomy Hiemstra, bounced off the left side of the line ... and suddenly, he was gone, galloping down the near sideline for a 64-yard touchdown. With Herrins extra-point kick (he was five for five in that department), the game was on with Summerville up 7-0.

A the next series, Hiemstra put Herrin in motion from right to left, took the snap and pitched the ball to Herrin, who immediately handed it off to Kyle Kosako on what appeared to be a reverse. Instead, Kosako pitched the ball back to Hiemstra, who heaved the ball down the middle of the field to a wide-open Eric Bisset for a 50-yard touchdown and a 14-0 lead with 5:49 remaining in the quarter.
