Sonora High Schools Rick Francis has been chosen president-elect of the California State Athletic Directors Association.

Francis, 53, will serve a two-year term, then ascend to the presidency of an organization which represents virtually every high school in the state. He will also represent the state association, along with current

president Tom Welsh from Head Royce High School of Oakland, to the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association. The national group will

hold its 2001 convention Dec. 11-15 in Orlando, Fla.

Francis has been Sonoras varsity basketball coach for 25 seasons and is in his 20th year as athletic director. He had to juggle his hoop schedule, changing dates of games against Livingston and Bret Harte, in order to be available for the convention. He will also attend the state convention April 17-21 in San Diego.

The stated goals of the state association are to:

1) Foster higher standards, proficiency and ethics in athletic administration;

2) Promote close working relationships with related professional groups;

3) Professionally represent all high school athletic directors both statewide and nationally;

4) Promote opportunities for continuing study in the field of athletic administration;

5) Promote goodwill and fellowship among athletic directors in California.

Francis also is a big supporter of the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) and its Pursuing Victory With Honor program a statewide effort to battle the debilitating effects that taunting and general poor sportsmanship are having on high school athletics.

He has been a member of the state association since the 1980s, is a past president and current

board member of the Sac-Joaquin Section Athletic Directors Association and has represented the section to the state association since 1995. He is

also the medium-sized schools representative to the Section Board of Managers.
