Bears plan to challenge for MLL running title

TUOLUMNE The 2001 season could very well be one of swings for the Summerville High School boys and girls cross country teams.

While the boys are poised for a return to the State Meet after being shut out from last years festivities, the girls will more than likely be in the same position as the boys were in 2000 using this season as a building block.

Mike Tuck, Andrew Manford, Nick Reid, Marc Pruitt, Jordan Kohl and C.J. Haight return from last years runner-up squad in the Mother Lode League to do battle with defending champion Bret Harte for area bragging rights.

Our goal is to fight for the Mother Lode League title, Summerville coach Wayne DeGennaro said. Were coming back with most of our talent intact from last year. We had a lot of juniors on the team last year, so weve got a lot of experience.

Challenging the incumbent sextet for a spot among the top-five runners will be Travis Ford, Alex Vierra, Bryce Spitze and T.T. Geissler. From his group of 10 runners, DeGennaro thinks hell need five runners turning in performances under 18:30 to to wrest the MLL title from Bret Harte when Summerville hosts the league meet at Westside on Oct. 24.

League always seems to come down to Bret Harte and Summerville; occasionally Calaveras will sneak in there with a strong team, DeGennaro said. Im looking forward to it.

Although the girls team is also coming off a second-place finish in the MLL and boasts four-year varsity runner Shannon Miller, its odds of catching the Bullfrogs are not very good.

We lost a lot of seniors, DeGennaro said. I think the girls are going to have a tougher time coming back than the boys. But, they do have a shot if the keep running hard.
