Bears, Cats tie on cross-county soccer clash

TUOLUMNE If, as the saying goes, a tie game is like kissing your sister, this tie must have looked like Julia Roberts to the Summerville High School soccer team.

Thats how the Bears (1-2-1) must feel after ending years of frustration at the hands of cross-county rival Sonora (3-2-2) by tying the Wildcats 2-2 on Thursday night at Thorsted Field.

Its been five, six years since both teams have been at this level, Summerville coach Scott Traub said, whose team lost 7-1 to Sonora in 2000 and has not beaten the Cats since topping Sonora 3-2 in 1996. We havent been in a game this good in a long time.

The Bears jumped on top 1-0 early in the first half when Tyler Birkestrand scored his sixth goal of the young season by juking through the middle of Sonoras defense at the seven-minute mark.

Despite Sonoras 10-4 advantage in shots-on-goal in the first half, Bears goalie Woody Kumetat kept the Wildcats off the scoreboard and the Bears on top 1-0 at halftime. Overall, the Sonora outshot the Bears 25-10.

Zach Doster pushed Summervilles lead to 2-0 at the 12-minute mark of the second half with an assist from Tim Holland.

Sonoras offense began to click midway through the second half when Neal Bland managed squeezed a corner kick past Kumetat at the 56-minute mark, slicing Summervilles lead in half.

(Blands) shot was a great shot, Traub said. It ended up going in right under the crossbar.

As time began to wind down and with the game still very much in doubt, the level of physical play began to pick up for both teams.

The Wildcats continued to pepper Kumetat and the Summerville defense with shots-on-goal before finally breaking through with their second goal at the 70-minute mark when Phil Emery blasted one in from 20 yards out.
