Baier sets TCA swim records

Tuolumne County Aquatics swimmer Michael Baier recorded five career-bests at the Western Zone swimming meet earlier this month in Kihei, Hawaii.

Overall, Baier finished in 15th-place in the individual high point standings for the 17- to 18-year-old age group, while as a member of the 80-person Sierra Nevada team, Baier and his teammates took fourth place at the 17-team regional meet.

Baier kicked-off the meet by shattering his previous best time in the 200-meter backstroke by four seconds with a time of 2:19.56, good for fifth place. In the finals, he shaved another second off his time to finish sixth overall.

In the 400-meter medley relay, Baier, swimming the backstroke portion, and his teammates brokes the exisiting Zone record, but finished second to Oregon by fourteen-hundreths of a second. He also narrowly missed establishing a new personal best in the 50-meter freestyle with his tim eof :26.02.

In other events, Baier set new another personal-best in the 100-meter breaststroke (1:10.69) during the preliminaries before settling for sixth place in the finals. He also swam his best time in the 200-meter freestyle, but missed qualifying for the eight-man finals by taking finishing in 11th place.

On the final day of competition, Baier qualified for the finals in both of his events. After swimming to another personal-best in the preliminaries of the 100-meter backstroke (1:03.36), he took fifth in the event. He also swam a personal-best 2:17.96 in the 200-meter individual medley (breaking his old mark by three seconds), and also took fifth in the medley finals.

Overall, Baiers times in the 200-meter freestyle (2:03.32), 100-meter breaststroke (1:10.69) and 200-meter individual medley (2:17.86) established new Toulumne County Aquatics team records.
