BH golfers to scramble for scorers

After enjoying a plethora of success in its first two years of existence, the Bret Harte High School girls golf team is about to face its stiffest challenge in a matter of weeks.

Lauren Miller, the Bullfrogs No. 1 golfer and an all-Mother Lode League pick in 2000 as a sophomore, is leaving for Italy in the middle of September as a member of the foreign exchange student program.

But, not only will the Bullfrogs lose their top player, they must also find enough quality in the program to fill the extra scoring holes the league is adopting for the 2001 season.

What that means is the Bullfrogs, who advanced to sub-section last year after winning a league title in their first year of existence, not only have to replace their top golfer, but also contend with new scoring rules. The California Interscholastic Federation has mandated Section 5 schools will now have six golfer competing for five scoring slots per team, as opposed to the previous rule of four golfers competing for three scoring slots in previous years.

Im sure the scoring is going to be higher this year, Bret Harte golf coach Rich Cathcart said of his team which averaged 62 strokes per player last year in its nine-hole competitions. For us, it would be a lot better if Lauren was going to be playing with us all season. But, well get better as the season goes on.

Carthcart will have two other returning players he can count on to keep scores down seniors Alexis Henry and Kate Darby, both of whom alternated between the Nos. four and five slots last year.

Also being counted on in their first year on the varsity will be sophomores Krystal Thomson and K.C. Seiler and freshmen Kim Artiaga and Jessica Trueb.
