LOS BANOS Lindsey Davis and Ari Nesper of the Sonora High School girls tennis team finished second in the Valley Oak League doubles tournament on Wednesday.

As the No.7 seeds, they received a first-round bye. The duo then rolled into the finals by winning 10-3 over Alexia Kinbrough and Joanna Alvarado of Tracy, 10-5 Jennifer Gomez and Lindsay Rowley of Oakdale and 11-9 over Emily Gibson and Caren Chato of Tracy.

Gomez and Rowley were the doubles MVPs of the VOL this year and went into the match with a record of 29-0.

In the finals, Davis and Nesper were edged 10-8 by Oakdales No.2 and No.3 singles players, Barbora Prochazkova and Ashley Regales.

It was a wonderfully hard-fought match, said Sonora co coach Dave Fairfield.

Davis, a senior, and Nesper, a sophomore, extended their season by qualifying for the Sac-Joaquin Section doubles tournament, which is Saturday, Nov. 11, in Elk Grove.

Sonoras other two doubles teams made the third round of the VOL tourney. Defending champions Ellora Weston and Heather Johnston, the No.2 seeds, got a bye and then won 10-3 over the No.1 and No.2 singles players from Sierra of Manteca, Hillary Davis and Anna Lowery. Weston and Johnston then lost 10-6 to Stacia Orr and Leslie Jordan of Los Banos.

Nicole Meyer and Ilka Kiehne, Sonoras German exchange students, won 10-1 over Gurleen Deol and Lauren Carson from West of Tracy in the first round and 11-10 (8-6) in a tiebreaker over Tiffany Vaught and Sarah Baxter from East Union of Manteca in the second round. In the third round, the nearly knocked off Prochazkova and Regales, but were edged in and 11-10 (7-2) tiebreaker.
