Bret Harte tackles winless Brookside

Bret Harte High Schools big chance for one more football victory comes Friday night against winless Brookside Christian of Stockton.

The Bullfrogs, 0-4 in the Mother Lode League and 1-7 overall, host the Knights (0-4, 0-8) at 7:30 p.m. at Dorroh Field in Angels Camp.

Brookside undoubtedly feels the same way the Bullfrogs do this is their big chance. The Knights have been absolutely smacked around by everyone except Linden, to which they lost 22-12 at home a couple weeks ago. Overall, theyve been outscored 320-67 40-8 per game.

Bret Harte is giving up 39 points per game and scoring 12.5. The Bullfrogs have one thing Brookside doesnt a victory, 24-22 over Gustine in the second week of the season.

Brookside has undergone a transition with the departure of coach Booker Guyton to start a football program at Calvary Temple in Modesto. When he left, so did the players he had gleaned from public schools all over the greater Stockton area.

The Brookside administration was glad to end the controversial, though successful, Guyton era. The Knights won two straight Superior California Athletic League titles in 1998 and 99 with high-scoring, run-and-gun offenses, though they never got past the first round of the playoffs.

Phil Orosco is the new coach and hes happy to be working with a small roster of homegrown players. Quarterback Mark Donahue can throw a bit, as he tossed for two touchdowns against Summerville in the league opener.

Bret Harte passed well against Summerville, too, but gained only nine yards through the air in last weeks 32-6 non-league loss to LeGrand. The running of Greg Sherrow will probably be the key this week.

The Brookside game is the second of three straight at home for the Bullfrogs. Theyll host archrival Calaveras (4-0, 8-0) next Thursday.
