Bears go for victory on senior night

Summerville High School came within a blocked field goal of beating the top football team in the Mother Lode League last week. The Bears will try to put a dent in the second-best team Friday night when they host Amador of Sutter Creek at Thorsted Field in Tuolumne.

Coach Dave Woods said the Bears wont be drawing their motivation from Amadors stature or from a domino-effect scenario that could still put them in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III playoffs, but from within.

Its the last home game and its senior night, he said. You always want to play well and win games like those.

A victory over Amador would be a feather in the Bears cap as the Buffaloes are 7-1, including 3-1 in the Mother Lode League, with their only loss 20-17 in double-overtime to Calaveras two weeks ago. Summerville (2-2, 2-6) nearly handed Calaveras its first loss last week, but was nipped 2-0 in San Andreas when a chip-shot field goal was blocked late in the fourth quarter.

Whether the narrow miss against Calaveras will energize or bum out the Bears remains to be seen.

I hope we can get up again and play that well again, said Woods.

As for the playoffs, Summerville would have to beat Amador and Linden next week, Argonaut of Jackson (4-0, 5-3) would have to lose to Calaveras and Amador and Summerville would have to have a head-to-head advantage in point differential against Argonaut and Amador. The Bears lost to Argonaut by 13 points in mid-October.

Woods isnt worrying about any of that.

We just have to win this week and kind of see how everybody else does.

Beating Amador is a tall order.

Theyre big and theyve got a lot of speed, said Woods. Theyre a lot faster than Calaveras.
