ANGELS CAMP Although LeGrand boasted a 5-2 record entering Friday nights non-league football game at Dorroh Field, the Bulldogs had yet to beat a team with a winning record. It was hoped that would give the Bret Harte High School Bullfrogs confidence as they looked for their second victory of the season.

Down by only eight points at halftime, the Bullfrogs thought they might have a chance to pull off an upset. However, a strong second half by LeGrand resulted in a 32-6 non-league victory for the Bulldogs, who are contending for the playoffs in the Southern League.

A sluggish start by LeGrand would allow the Frogs (1-7) to stay close going into their intermission, 14-6. In the second half, LeGrand would score early and never look back.

Neither team was able to muster much offense in a first half dominated by defense and penalties. When either team gained momentum, the yellow hankies would start to fly. LeGrand took the brunt of the penalties as it was flagged 14 times for 146 yards on the night to six times for 55 yards for the Frogs.

The Bulldogs Rafael Cervantes opened the scoring the scoring with a four-yard run. The extra point kick was blocked by the Frogs and with 5:56 to play in the the opening quarter LeGrand led 6-0.

In the second quarter, Bret Harte, which had a bye in the Mother Lode League, tied it when Greg Sherrow ran in from six yards out. A failed two-point conversion left the game in a 6-6 deadlock.

LeGrand was able to retake the lead by halftime when Cervantes found Alex Thomas wide open in the back of the endzone for a 12-yard strike with 4:28 on the clock. Cervantes and Thomas hooked up again moments later for a two-point conversion and the score stood 14-6 at halftime.
