99-yard run highlights 33-0 Sonora victory

LOS BANOS Some spectacular plays punctuated Sonora High Schools 33-0 football victory over winless Los Banos Friday night.

The most spectacular was a 99-yard touchdown run by Randy Landingham in the fourth quarter. There can be no longer play in football and there hadnt been one at Sonora since 1989, when Mark Duarte caught a 99-yard touchdown pass from Mike Viskovich in a 31-0 victory over Summerville.

On the first play after Sonora had completed a goalline stand at its own one, Landingham took a pitchout from Shane Speer about six yards deep in the endzone. He cut off right tackle, swerved to the Sonora sideline, picked up a final block from guard Davey Wagner and was gone, gone, gone.

The play, the last of the game run by Sonoras first unit, didnt exactly happen by design.

It was just supposed to get us out of the endzone, said Landingham after the game.

We just wanted to give the second offense some room, Sonora coach Robert Cendro said.

The big sprint gave Landingham a terrific statistical line 216 yards rushing and three touchdowns on only eight carries. In the last three games the senior speedster has 565 yards and seven touchdowns.

Sonora has a pretty great line of its own an 8-0 record, including 5-0 in the Valley Oak League. The Wildcats continue on a collision course with archrival Oakdale (5-0, 7-0-1) for a winner-take-all battle of unbeatens in the regular-season finale Thursday, Nov. 9, in Oakdale.

Oakdale nearly got derailed on Friday by Sierra of Manteca, but won 30-23 with a touchdown in the last five minutes against a team Sonora beat handily in Week 5.
