The Wildcats (11-4, 6-4 Valley Oak League) stayed with unbeaten Buhach Colony of Atwater for the better part of two games, but ultimately lost 25-20, 25-19, 25-14 at Bud Castle Gym.

"We played them real tough," Sonora coach Darla Mayhew said. "They were at full strength, and the first two games we were right there with them. Then we got a little tight in the third game and struggled a little bit. But we held Anna Muratore to 11 kills."

Muratore, a senior hitter for Buhach and the league's most dominant player, is headed for the NCAA Division I program at Santa Clara University next year.

Sonora took Buhach to five games Sept. 25 in Atwater, but that night the Thunder was without its starting setter and also had another top hitter slowed by an injury. Muratore is just one of three Thunder players expected to go Division I.

"They have a lot of weapons," Mayhew said.

Sonora statistics:

Hitting Lindsy Evans 12-for-15 with three kills, Kelsey Peterson 4-for-6 with three, Jillian Bartgis 5-for-6 with two, Danein Wells 6-for-6 with one.

Tipping Evans 5-for-5 with two kills, Peterson 8-for-8 with one.

Blocks Evans and Wells four, Kim Lorenzen two.

Serving Margaret Hemphill 9-for-11, Peterson 7-for-7, Evans 6-for-8 with one ace, Jill Thompson 4-for-4, Breann Craig 4-for-4.

Setting Hemphill 67-for-69 with 12 assists

Digs Hemphill seven, Bartgis six, Haley McColloch and Evans three.

Sonora plays Sierra of Manteca tomorrow night at 6 at Castle. Since Sonora beat the Timberwolves in five games Sept. 30 in Manteca, the Timberwolves have added senior Tracy transfer Nikita Gordon. As a freshman, she helped Tracy upset Sonora in both volleyball and basketball.
